Quick Answer: Rail Freight from China — Costs & Delivery Times

Rail freight from China to Europe takes about 16–20 days door to door — the practical middle ground between air (5–9 days, expensive) and sea (30–45 days, slow). Main corridors run from Xi’an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Zhengzhou and Yiwu across Kazakhstan, and on to Duisburg, Hamburg, Malaszewicze, Warsaw and Moscow.

Rail suits heavy cargo, machinery, auto parts and eCommerce stock that has to arrive faster than sea but costs less than air. Rates sit between air and sea — we quote per container or per CBM depending on whether you book a full box or a consolidated rail LCL consignment.

What Is China–Europe Rail Freight?

Rail freight moves containers overland on the China–Europe and China–Russia railway corridors. Containers are loaded at an inland Chinese terminal, carried across the border into Kazakhstan or Russia, transferred between rail gauges at the border, and continued through Belarus, Poland and onward into the European rail network or the Russian domestic network.

The service is door-to-door once trucking is added at both ends: we collect from your supplier, load at the rail terminal, handle export and transit documentation, clear the cargo at destination and deliver to your warehouse or fulfillment center. For sellers and importers who need a predictable 3-week window at a price far below air, it is usually the best option on the Europe lane.

The Main Rail Corridors

Corridor choice is decided by the destination, the commodity and the space available that week. These are the routings we book most:

Rail vs Air vs Sea vs Road (China to Europe)

Four options, four different answers to the same question — how much is a week of your time worth?

How Rail Freight Is Priced

Rail is quoted either per container, per CBM for consolidated consignments, or per tonne for heavy goods — and which one applies depends on your cargo, not on us.

Rail sits above sea and below air on cost. Compared with sea, you are buying roughly two weeks; compared with air, you are giving up a week and saving the air premium. On dense cargo that equation usually favours rail; on low-value bulk cargo it usually does not.

What Ships Well by Rail

  • Machinery, equipment and production line components
  • Auto parts, tyres and finished vehicles in containers where permitted
  • Electronics, home appliances and consumer durables
  • Furniture, building materials and hardware
  • Textiles, apparel and general merchandise
  • eCommerce and marketplace stock bound for European fulfillment centres

Rail is generally more restricted than sea on dangerous goods. Batteries, aerosols, flammables and some chemicals need advance confirmation, and a number of carriers will not accept lithium batteries at all on certain routings. Send the specification early — a rejected booking at the terminal is expensive.

Borders, Gauge Changes and Customs

Overland freight crosses several jurisdictions, and that is where the timeline is won or lost. Containers are transferred from the standard Chinese gauge to the wider Kazakh and Russian gauge at Alashankou or Khorgos, a process that usually takes a day and occasionally longer during peak periods.

Documentation has to satisfy each leg: Chinese export formalities, the transit declaration for the Eurasian Economic Union, and the import clearance in the destination country, which under our DDP service we handle along with duties and VAT per the agreed terms.

Since 2022 the corridors have also required compliance screening, and some commodity and consignee combinations are not accepted. We check the goods against the current carrier rules before booking rather than after the container is loaded.

Documents for a Rail Shipment

  • Rail consignment note — the CIM or SMGS document that carries the container across the corridors
  • Commercial invoice and packing list, checked against the cargo we load
  • Certificate of origin, and product certificates such as CE, EAC or EPR where the destination requires them
  • Transit and customs documents for each border crossed
  • Import entry documents at destination — under DDP we file them; under DAP they go to your broker

What Can Delay a Rail Shipment

  • Border congestion — queues at Alashankou, Khorgos and Brest lengthen when volume rises or infrastructure work is running
  • Gauge transfer — the physical change of wheelsets takes a day in normal conditions, longer in peak weeks
  • Wagon and platform shortages — the first constraint when volume spikes ahead of Chinese New Year
  • Weather — extreme cold and snow slow handling on the Kazakh and Siberian legs in winter
  • Compliance screening — restricted goods discovered late stop at the terminal rather than at the border
  • Destination clearance — an inaccurate invoice or missing certificate holds the container at a European terminal, where storage is charged daily

What Is Moving Rail in Q3 2026

  • Q4 space — European importers book rail earlier each year, and the October–December window fills first
  • Pre-Chinese New Year rush — the four weeks before the holiday are the tightest of the year on every corridor
  • Border infrastructure — gauge-transfer and terminal capacity work on the Kazakh corridors adds days when it coincides with high volume
  • Rate discipline — rail prices track space rather than headline announcements, so booking two to three weeks ahead usually beats booking close to departure

How to read these numbers: our published transits are planning ranges, not guarantees. A booking is confirmed against the weekly train space actually reserved, the wagon type available for your cargo and the border conditions at the time of loading.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does rail freight from China to Europe take?
About 16–20 days door to door to Central Europe, and 18–25 days to western or southern Europe once the onward leg from a European hub is added. Moscow runs 12–18 days.
Is rail cheaper than air?
Yes — rail typically costs around 30–50% of the air rate for comparable cargo, which is why it suits heavy or bulky shipments that cannot wait a month for a vessel.
What is the minimum volume for rail?
From about 1 CBM on a consolidated rail service. Full container rates usually make sense from around 20 CBM, and heavy cargo can also be priced per tonne.
Can I ship batteries or dangerous goods by rail?
Sometimes. Rail is more restrictive than sea, and several carriers refuse lithium batteries on certain routings. Send the product specification and battery details at the quote stage so we can confirm what is accepted.
Can I ship to Russia by rail?
Yes — China–Russia rail is a core service with full customs handling, and it remains the most predictable route to Moscow and other Russian cities.
Who clears customs at the border?
We do, as part of the transit and import formalities. Under DDP terms we also settle the destination duties and VAT per the agreement and deliver to your address.
Which Chinese cities do the trains depart from?
Xi’an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Zhengzhou, Yiwu and Hefei are the main terminals, with additional services from Shenzhen and Guangzhou via feeder trucking.
Is rail suitable for eCommerce or FBA stock?
Yes. Rail is widely used for replenishment into European fulfilment centres — it delivers in about three weeks at a cost well below air, and the containers arrive intact with less handling than LCL sea freight.
