How to find the right China HS code

  1. Search by what the product is — type the common English name (e.g. “smartphone”) or a Chinese name if you have one.
  2. Compare the shortlist — several codes can look similar; the description and the “unit” column tell them apart (e.g. sets vs parts, by power or by material).
  3. Check the 6-digit base — the first 6 digits must match what your destination country would use for the same goods; if they don't, one classification is wrong.
  4. Open the code to see the export rebate, supervision conditions and the declaration elements customs will ask for.
  5. Confirm before declaring — rates and rules change; your freight forwarder's broker validates the code when the shipment is booked.
💡 PRO TIP: The 10-digit code is used on the Chinese export declaration. The export rebate shown on each code is what your supplier can reclaim — a different (but lawful) subdivision can change the rebate, which is one reason suppliers' quotes sometimes use different codes for the same goods.

China HS code vs. your country's tariff — what's the difference?

The first 6 digits are international: China, the US (HTS), the EU (TARIC/CN) and every other WCO member describe the same goods under the same 6-digit subheading. From digit 7 onward each country subdivides in its own way, and each country sets its own duty rates.

So this tool answers two questions for an import from China:

  • What code goes on the export declaration? — the full Chinese 10-digit code (this tool).
  • What duty will I pay at home? — look up the same 6 digits in your own national tariff.

Shipping under DDP? DDPLINK handles the export declaration, the destination-country clearance and prepays the duties — we confirm the classification on both ends before your cargo ships.

Frequently asked questions

What is a China HS code?
A China HS code is the 10-digit commodity code used on Chinese customs export and import declarations. The first 6 digits are the international Harmonized System (HS) subheading, identical in every country that follows the WCO convention. Digits 7–10 are China-specific subdivisions that add detail such as power, material or use. Finding the correct code matters because it determines export documentation, supervision requirements (licences, inspection) and the export VAT rebate rate your supplier can claim.
How many digits do I need for shipping from China?
Chinese customs declarations use the full 10-digit code. For a freight quote or a rough duty comparison you can often work with the 6-digit international subheading — it is the same in your country and in China — but the final export declaration requires the exact 10-digit code. When in doubt, ask your supplier for the code they declared on past shipments, or send the product to DDPLINK and we will confirm the classification before booking.
My supplier quoted a different HS code than I found — which is right?
Both can be defensible. Chinese classification rules occasionally differ from other countries on subdivisions, and different suppliers sometimes declare similar products under different 8–10 digit codes to benefit from a higher export rebate. What must match internationally is the first 6 digits. If the 6-digit part differs, one of the two classifications is very likely wrong — get it checked before shipping, because a wrong code can delay customs clearance or trigger a valuation review.
Do I pay Chinese import duties when I buy from China?
No. As the importer in your own country you pay duties under your country's tariff schedule, not China's. This tool shows China's tariff data because you need the correct Chinese 10-digit code for the export declaration, for export VAT rebate calculations and to check Chinese supervision requirements. For the duty you will actually pay, look up the first 6 digits in your country's tariff (HTS / TARIC / national schedule).
What are the declaration elements?
Declaration elements are the descriptive fields Chinese customs requires for each code — for example brand, model, power, material, use or CAS number. They are listed here exactly as required by Chinese customs. Your freight forwarder's customs broker fills these in during export declaration, so it helps to have product details such as brand, model and technical specs ready when you book.
What are supervision conditions and inspection categories?
Supervision conditions are licence or approval requirements for importing that commodity into China — for example a certificate for restricted goods. Inspection categories mark goods subject to Chinese commodity inspection or food/animal/plant quarantine. Most ordinary consumer goods show no supervision conditions. Codes flagged here matter mainly for shipments INTO China; for exports, your broker confirms what applies at the time of declaration.
How accurate and current is this data?
The tariff data mirrors China's current Import & Export Tariff (2026 version) as published and maintained by customs data services, with per-code update dates shown on each record. Tariff rates and supervision rules change — treat any figure as a reference and confirm the live rate with your customs broker before declaring.
