Sea shipping from China to the UK in Q4 2026: FCL rates by port pair, LCL per-CBM costs, Felixstowe transit times, and the 20% VAT, duty and PVA maths.
Sea shipping from China to the UK remains the cheapest way to move volume into Britain: in Q4 2026 a 20ft container costs $1,250–$2,180 port-to-port, a 40ft $2,380–$3,580, and LCL $150–$250 per CBM from Shanghai, Ningbo and Shenzhen to Felixstowe and Southampton, with transit of 25–38 days.
Those are freight figures. What decides whether a shipment works is the landed cost: duty under the UK Global Tariff, 20% import VAT, and how much of that VAT comes back. The bands below reuse our Shipping from China to the UK data and are dated Q4 2026.
Quick Answer: Sea Shipping from China to the UK (Q4 2026)
Q4 2026 working bands for general commercial cargo. Customs, duty, VAT and inland delivery are quoted separately unless you book DDP.
| Service | Q4 2026 Rate Band | Port-to-Port | Door to Door | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LCL (shared container) | $150–$250/CBM | 25–38 days | 32–45 days | 1–8 CBM, first orders, mixed SKUs |
| FCL 20ft | $1,250–$2,180 | 25–38 days | 32–42 days | 14–28 CBM, heavy cargo |
| FCL 40ft | $2,380–$3,580 | 26–38 days | 33–43 days | 30–58 CBM, light bulky goods |
| FCL 40ft High Cube | Quoted per sailing | 26–38 days | 33–43 days | Tall pallets, 60–68 CBM |
| DDP sea (all-in) | Per container or per CBM, duty and VAT included | — | 32–44 days | Amazon UK FBA and importers without an EORI |
BAF (bunker adjustment), PSS (peak season surcharge, roughly September to November) and the vessel’s rotation move these numbers after booking. Bands are indicative — this corridor has moved 20–30% inside a month, so plan against your sailing week’s quote.
Our Industry Insights. The misquote we correct most often is not the ocean freight. It is a carrier LCL base rate compared against a forwarder’s all-in container rate. Those are not the same product. Before you choose, check both quotes are cut at the same point: same origin handling, same destination handling, same clearance scope.
FCL or LCL: Where the Volume Maths Actually Flips
Most guides put the crossover at 13–15 CBM. On the rates we book to the UK it can arrive at 6 CBM, and the reason is arithmetic rather than opinion: LCL is billed per revenue ton — the greater of cubic metres or metric tonnes — while FCL is billed per container whether you fill it or not.
| Factor | LCL (shared) | FCL 20ft | FCL 40ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Billing unit | Per CBM or per 1,000 kg, whichever is greater | Per container | Per container |
| Usable capacity | Your share only | About 28 CBM | About 58 CBM |
| Ocean cost for 4 CBM of cargo | $600–$1,000 | $1,250–$2,180 | $2,380–$3,580 |
| Origin and destination handling | Per CBM at both CFS points | Per box | Per box |
| Transit | 25–38 days plus 2–3 days each end | 25–38 days | 26–38 days |
The crossover depends on which LCL number you were quoted. Take a 20ft at $1,857–$2,557 all-in to the UK port (freight, China export handling, UK terminal handling, ENS, clearance; excluding delivery, duty and VAT) and divide by your LCL rate:
| If your LCL rate is | Crossover to a 20ft |
|---|---|
| $150/CBM (our low-end consolidated band) | About 12–17 CBM |
| $210/CBM (our typical London-gateway band) | About 9–12 CBM |
| $320/CBM (all-in per CBM after CFS, THC and clearance) | About 6–8 CBM |
That last row is what small importers actually pay. A 4 CBM LCL shipment that reads as $600 of ocean freight lands near $1,280 once origin CFS, UK terminal handling, ENS and clearance are added — roughly $320 per CBM, against $66–$91 per CBM for a full 20ft at 28 CBM.
Our Industry Insights. We price both on every enquiry above 5 CBM. About one in four shipments between 6 and 12 CBM quoted as LCL is cheaper as a part-loaded 20ft — usually dense cargo, one UK delivery address, per-CBM destination charges. Below 5 CBM LCL wins; above 17 CBM FCL wins. The middle is where the quote decides.
The ocean leg itself is scoped on our Sea Freight from China page, including the surcharges that sit outside the base rate.
FCL Rates from China to the UK, Port Pair by Port Pair
Container rates are quoted per lane, not per country: a Shanghai–Felixstowe box and a Shenzhen–Felixstowe box are different products, and the spread between lanes can exceed the spread within one.
| Route | Port-to-Port | 20ft FCL | 40ft FCL | LCL per CBM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shanghai → Felixstowe | 25–32 days | $1,250–$1,950 | $2,380–$3,280 | $150–$210 |
| Shipping from Ningbo → Southampton | 26–35 days | $1,320–$2,050 | $2,480–$3,420 | $160–$220 |
| Shenzhen → Felixstowe | 27–38 days | $1,380–$2,180 | $2,580–$3,580 | $170–$250 |
Per CBM at realistic fill, a 20ft at 28 CBM works out to $45–$70 from Shanghai, $47–$73 from Ningbo and $49–$78 from Shenzhen; a 40ft at 58 CBM gives $41–$57, $43–$59 and $45–$62. Two 20ft boxes hold about 56 CBM and cost $2,500–$3,900 on the Shanghai lane, so a single 40ft wins on both capacity and price.
Weight is the exception: a 20ft carries about 28 tonnes of payload and a 40ft about 26.5, so dense cargo such as tiles or machinery maxes out a 20ft on weight at perhaps 18 CBM. A 40ft High Cube adds about 30 cm of height and is priced per sailing.
LCL Rates per CBM — and What the Headline Number Leaves Out
Two very different LCL numbers circulate: carrier base rates run $55–$90 per CBM, while the all-in figure an importer pays is closer to $150–$320. The gap is origin CFS handling, UK terminal handling, the ENS filing and clearance.
| Cost Line | Typical Q4 2026 Level | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean freight (LCL) | $150–$250/CBM | Our consolidated band; carrier base rates of $55–$90/CBM exclude everything below |
| Origin CFS handling | $25–$35/CBM | Consolidation and loading at the Chinese CFS |
| China export declaration | $40–$60 per B/L | Per shipment, not per CBM |
| UK terminal handling (CFS) | $55–$75/CBM | Deconsolidation at Felixstowe or Southampton |
| ENS filing | $25–$40 per B/L | Safety and Security declaration, filed before loading |
| UK customs clearance (CDS) | $75–$120 per entry | Per declaration |
| UK delivery | $0.60–$1.20/kg, minimum around $90 | Depends on postcode and vehicle access |
Billing is by revenue ton, so weight counts as much as volume. A pallet measuring 0.6 CBM and weighing 900 kg bills as 0.9 W/M; 3 CBM weighing 3,100 kg bills as 3.1 W/M. Most tariffs also carry a 1 CBM minimum, so a single carton pays for a cubic metre.
Worked example — 4 CBM and 1,100 kg of general cargo, FOB $6,400, duty 3.7%, Shanghai to Felixstowe:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Ocean freight (4 W/M × $190) | $760 |
| Origin CFS handling | $120 |
| UK terminal handling (4 CBM × $70) | $280 |
| ENS and CDS clearance | $117 |
| UK duty (3.7% on CIF) | $271 |
| Import VAT at 20% (recoverable under PVA) | $1,517 |
| Total to UK port, before delivery and recoverable VAT | $7,948 |
The all-in cost to the UK port is $1,277 before duty against a $760 ocean figure — a 68% loading on the headline rate. That is why we quote LCL on an all-in per-CBM basis with the breakdown shown.
Real-Life Scenario. A Birmingham homeware importer booked 6 CBM of ceramics on a $70/CBM carrier rate. The shipment arrived on time; the invoice did not match. Origin CFS at $32/CBM, UK deconsolidation at $68/CBM, a $95 clearance fee and a $180 delivery minimum took the total to about $1,390 — roughly $232 per CBM, three times plan. On 6 CBM a part-loaded 20ft at $1,250 would have cost less. She now gets both prices, itemised, before she commits.
How Long Sea Shipping from China to the UK Takes
Port-to-port transit is 25–38 days, and the spread is not noise: it reflects which way the vessel goes and how many ports it calls first.
| Leg | Suez routing | Cape of Good Hope routing |
|---|---|---|
| Shanghai or Ningbo → Felixstowe, direct | 25–32 days | 35–45 days |
| Shenzhen → Felixstowe | 27–38 days | 37–48 days |
| LCL consolidation and deconsolidation | Add 4–6 days | Add 4–6 days |
| UK clearance and delivery | Add 3–7 days | Add 3–7 days |
| Door-to-door planning horizon | 32–42 days | 42–55 days |
Both routings are in service on this lane in Q4 2026, sometimes on the same carrier’s schedule. That is why a 25–38 day band covers everything from a direct Suez call to a Cape rotation with two transhipments, and why we confirm the rotation at booking.
For cargo that cannot wait 40 days but cannot justify air freight, China–Europe Rail Freight from China runs roughly 22–30 days to a European terminal plus a Channel crossing. It suits 5–20 CBM of mid-value restock and is a poor fit for bulky low-value cargo.
Two clock details catch people out. Transit starts when the container is loaded, not when your supplier finishes production — allow 7–12 days for pickup, export declaration and stuffing. It stops at discharge, not when the goods reach your warehouse.
UK Gateways Compared: Felixstowe, Southampton, London Gateway, Liverpool
The arrival port changes the inland leg more than the ocean rate. For a Leeds consignee Liverpool saves trucking; for a London eCommerce brand London Gateway is a shorter run than Felixstowe.
| Port | Transit from China | Strength | Watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Felixstowe | 25–32 days | Largest UK container port, roughly a third of national traffic, widest carrier choice | Congestion builds here first in peak season |
| Southampton | 26–35 days | Deep-water berths, usually less congested, good for large boxes | Fewer direct calls; some services feed from Continental hubs |
| London Gateway | 26–35 days | Thames-side, close to London and South East distribution | Busier than capacity implies in Q4; book haulage early |
| Liverpool | 27–38 days | Cuts 150–250 km of trucking for the North and Scotland | Fewer China direct services; often transhipment |
Port-to-door haulage in the UK is a function of distance and access. A 20ft from Felixstowe to the Midlands runs about $470–$700, to Manchester or Leeds $700–$950, into Scotland $950–$1,300. Residential addresses without a loading bay, or deliveries needing a tail-lift and a fixed window, cost more. For Amazon UK the FC code sets the delivery address; mislabelled FBA cartons are a common cause of demurrage.
Duty, 20% VAT and PVA: The Landed Cost of a 20ft Container
Freight is the easiest line to quote and the smallest part of most UK landed costs. On a 20ft of furniture with an $18,000 FOB value, freight and UK-side charges come to about 15% of goods value; import VAT alone is 22.7%.
Duty under the UK Global Tariff
The UK applies its own UK Global Tariff, not EU TARIC. Most consumer goods from China attract 0–12% duty, calculated on the CIF value — goods plus international freight plus insurance.
| Duty rate (example) | Duty on a CIF value of $19,659 |
|---|---|
| 0% (many electronics, some machinery) | $0 |
| 2% | $393 |
| 4.7% | $924 |
| 12% (many finished consumer goods) | $2,359 |
Classification drives this line, so the HS code must be right before the container sails. A wrong code means a corrected entry, a possible penalty and a delay while HMRC reviews the declaration. Anti-dumping duties sit on top for a listed set of products — ceramic tableware, some steel, e-bikes, certain fasteners — applied by origin and producer, not by category alone.
20% VAT, PVA and who gets it back
Import VAT is 20% on the CIF value plus duty: $4,089 on the example above. For a VAT-registered UK business, Postponed VAT Accounting means the VAT is declared on the next return instead of paid at the border, and reclaimed in the same return — net cost zero, provided the entry is declared under the importer’s own EORI and VAT number. Under DDP Shipping from China the forwarder clears under its own EORI, recovers the VAT and prices it in, which is correct but means you never see the C79 statement.
For a non-VAT-registered importer the 20% is a permanent cost. DDP is usually the simpler route there, because the price already contains it.
CDS, EORI and the ENS filing
Every UK import is declared through the Customs Declaration Service (CDS), which replaced CHIEF, and the declaration needs a GB EORI, an accurate commodity code and the customs procedure code. Sea cargo also needs an ENS — an entry summary declaration for safety and security — lodged before loading at the Chinese port. It is a separate filing from the import declaration, and a missing one can stop a container being loaded.
Product rules and the £135 line
UKCA marking applies to many regulated categories sold in Great Britain; CE is still accepted in Northern Ireland under the Windsor Framework, and several GB categories remain under transitional arrangements, so check the current GOV.UK position for your product before printing packaging. Separately, business-to-consumer consignments valued at £135 or less have VAT accounted for by the seller at point of sale rather than at the border — a rule that changes small DTC parcels, not B2B container imports.
Landed cost on the 20ft example:
| Cost Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Goods, FOB Shanghai | $18,000 |
| Ocean freight, 20ft to Felixstowe | $1,600 |
| Marine insurance (0.3%) | $59 |
| China pickup and export declaration | $200 |
| UK terminal handling, ISPS, documentation | $290 |
| ENS filing | $32 |
| CDS clearance | $85 |
| UK duty (4%) | $786 |
| Delivery, Felixstowe to the Midlands | $470 |
| Total, excluding recoverable VAT | $21,522 |
| Import VAT at 20% (PVA — declared, not paid at the border) | $4,089 |
| Cash needed if VAT is not postponed | $25,611 |
That gap is a cash-flow question, not a cost question — which is why we ask about VAT registration before quoting.
What Goes Wrong in Practice: Free Time, Peak Season and Port Delays
Most UK sea freight problems are timing problems that were visible at booking.
Free time is short. UK ports typically allow 3–5 days of free storage before demurrage starts. Charges commonly run $80–$150 per container per day and escalate. A container arriving Friday whose haulier cannot collect until Tuesday is already at the edge.
Pre-clearance beats post-arrival clearance. Manifest data is available before the vessel berths, so a declaration can be lodged and cleared in advance. Importers who wait for arrival to send documents lose 2–4 days.
| Period | What Happens | What We Advise |
|---|---|---|
| Jan–Feb (Chinese New Year) | Factories close 1–3 weeks; sailings thin out | Book before late January or plan March departures |
| Aug–Sep (Q4 build-up) | Rates firm from September; space tightens | Book Q4 and Black Friday stock by late August |
| Oct–Nov (Black Friday, Christmas) | Air and express capacity sells out; sea space at a premium | Holiday inventory on the water by mid-October |
| Dec–Jan (January sales restock) | Rates soften; congestion eases | A good window for large sea bookings |
Our Industry Insights. The claims we handle cluster at the terminal gate, not on the ocean: a container collected late, an address that could not take an artic, a customs query because the invoice value did not match the entry. On a 20ft, three days of avoidable demurrage costs more than the spread between the cheapest and dearest ocean rate we quoted that month.
Our Industry Insights. Weight is the quiet cost driver. Dense cargo can reach a 20ft payload limit at 18 CBM, so the per-CBM economics above do not apply. We ask for gross weight before recommending a container, because road legality and sea legality are separate checks — the SOLAS verified gross mass declaration must be lodged before loading, and the UK road limit is 44 tonnes gross for the vehicle.
FAQ: Sea Shipping from China to the UK
How much does sea shipping from China to the UK cost in Q4 2026?
A 20ft runs $1,250–$2,180 port-to-port, a 40ft $2,380–$3,580 and LCL $150–$250 per CBM on the Shanghai, Ningbo and Shenzhen lanes. Add UK terminal handling, clearance, duty at 0–12% and 20% VAT, or book DDP for one all-in figure.
How long does sea shipping from China to the UK take?
25–38 days port-to-port on a Suez routing, 35–48 days around the Cape of Good Hope, plus 3–7 days for UK clearance and delivery. Plan 32–42 days door-to-door on a direct service.
Is LCL or FCL cheaper for my shipment?
It depends on the LCL rate you were quoted. On our bands the crossover to a 20ft sits between 6 and 17 CBM — closer to 6 CBM if your all-in LCL rate is around $320/CBM, closer to 17 CBM on a $150/CBM consolidated rate. Below 5 CBM LCL wins; above 17 CBM FCL does.
Do I need an EORI number to import by sea into the UK?
Yes, every UK import declaration requires a GB EORI. Under DDP we clear under our own, so you can start without one — but you cannot reclaim import VAT without your own registration, and the customs record will not be in your name.
What is the minimum LCL charge from China to the UK?
Most tariffs apply a 1 CBM minimum, and billing is on revenue tons — the greater of cubic metres and tonnes. A pallet measuring 0.6 CBM but weighing 900 kg bills as 0.9 W/M.
Can you deliver sea freight to Amazon UK fulfilment centres?
Yes. We ship FBA cargo by LCL and FCL with FBA labels, packing lists and delivery to the FC code on the booking. Goods stored in the UK generally require VAT registration, and Amazon UK requires sellers to hold an EORI — we flag both at quote stage.
Conclusion: Get the FCL or LCL Number Before You Book
Sea freight into the UK is a two-decision problem: which unit you buy, and what sits outside the ocean rate. Get the unit wrong and you overpay by 20–40% between 6 and 12 CBM; get the landed cost wrong and it works on paper only.
Run your volume, weight and UK postcode through our Freight Cost Calculator for a first band, then send the cargo details and we will price LCL and a part-loaded 20ft on the same scope, with duty and VAT broken out.
