Door-to-door shipping from China to the USA in Q4 2026: stage-by-stage costs, air and sea transit, DDP versus DAP, last-mile options and CBP holds add days.

Door-to-door shipping from China to the USA is one invoice for seven stages: supplier pickup, export declaration, the main leg, US entry, duty, port or airport handling, and delivery to a street address in the United States. In Q4 2026 that runs about $3.50–$7.50/kg by air in 3–7 days, from roughly $880 for a 20ft container by sea in 15–35 days, and $1.28–$1.71/kg by sea under DDP in about 40 days plus a destination delivery fee. Those are handling bands, not a landed number — duty, the entry fee and the last mile decide the rest.

The phrase hides a fork most quotes never make explicit. Door-to-door describes a service scope; DDP describes who pays duty. You can buy door-to-door delivery under DAP and still receive a duty bill at the door, and you can buy DDP that stops at a port. This guide separates the two, prices each stage, and shows where the chain actually breaks. For the market overview first, see our Shipping from China to USA destination guide.

Quick Answer: Door-to-Door Shipping from China to the USA (Q4 2026)

Working bands for general cargo in Q4 2026, built from our US destination-page data. The middle column is where door-to-door quotes diverge most.

Service Door-to-door (Q4 2026) What the price contains Best for
Express courier 3–7 days Pickup, flight, entry, duty, residential delivery, one tracking number Samples and parcels up to about 30 kg
DDP air, 22–99 kg 6–8 working days, $8.29/kg Pickup, air freight, entry, duty, delivery Launch stock and seasonal replenishment
DDP air, 100 kg and up 6–8 working days, $7.57/kg The same scope at the heavier weight break 100–500 kg of general cargo
DDP sea, 101 kg and up About 40 days, $1.71/kg plus destination fee Pickup, ocean freight, entry, duty, delivery Bulky cargo that cannot justify air
DDP sea, 300 kg and up About 40 days, $1.28/kg plus destination fee The same scope at the 300 kg break Furniture, machinery, full pallets
Sea FCL, port-to-port 15–35 days, from $880 per 20ft Ocean freight and origin charges only Buyers with their own broker and bond

The last row is not door-to-door, and it is the row most rate tables quote. Add roughly 4–9 days and a duty bill to reach your address.

What Door-to-Door Shipping from China to the USA Covers, Stage by Stage

Every stage has an owner, a document and a characteristic failure. A quote is only as complete as the stage it quietly hands back to you.

Stage Who owns it Document it produces Where it fails
1. Supplier pickup and consolidation Forwarder Warehouse receipt, packing list Supplier ships late or mislabels cartons
2. Export declaration in China Forwarder Export customs release Restricted goods, missing MSDS
3. Main carriage Carrier, booked by forwarder Bill of lading or air waybill Rolled booking, blank sailing
4. Pre-arrival filing Forwarder or broker ISF (ocean), AMS manifest data Filed late, HTS code wrong
5. US entry and release Licensed broker CBP entry summary in ACE 5H or 9H hold, PGA query
6. Port or airport handling Terminal and drayage Delivery order, chassis release Free time expires, demurrage
7. Last mile Trucker or courier Proof of delivery No dock, no appointment, wrong ZIP

Under a true door-to-door contract you receive the goods at the address, but you should still receive the entry summary. It is the only document that shows what duty was actually paid on your behalf.

Our Industry Insight: the two stages that generate most of our claims are four and seven. A late ISF filing costs $5,000 or more per violation, and a missed dock appointment costs a re-delivery fee plus a day of truck time. Neither shows up in a rate table, which is why we quote last-mile access conditions alongside the freight rate rather than after it.

Door-to-Door Costs from China to the USA by Mode

Cost comparisons go wrong when air tariffs, ocean tariffs and all-in DDP rates share one column. They measure different things.

Mode Cost basis Q4 2026 band Door-to-door transit
Express courier Per parcel, divisor 5,000 Quoted per shipment, highest per kg 3–7 days
Air freight Chargeable weight, divisor 6,000 $3.50–$7.50/kg freight only 3–7 days plus clearance
Sea FCL Per container From $880 per 20ft, $2,185 per 40ft 15–35 days plus inland
Sea LCL Per CBM, weight-or-measure $325–$442/CBM 15–35 days plus deconsolidation
DDP air Chargeable weight, all-in $7.57–$8.29/kg 6–8 working days
DDP sea Chargeable weight, all-in $1.28–$1.71/kg plus destination fee About 40 days

Air freight and DDP air weight breaks

Air cargo bills on the greater of actual and volumetric weight. Our DDP air terms sit at two breaks, so the step between them is a step in kilos, not in service.

Chargeable weight DDP air per kg Example total Door to door
22 kg $8.29 $182 6–8 working days
100 kg $7.57 $757 6–8 working days
300 kg $7.57 $2,271 6–8 working days
1,000 kg $7.57 $7,570 6–8 working days

Sea freight and DDP sea

For buyers clearing on their own bond, these port-to-port references show where the market sits at the time of writing. They exclude duty, brokerage and inland delivery.

Route Transit 20ft 40ft LCL
Shanghai → Los Angeles 17–35 days $880–$1,758 $2,185–$2,863 $376/CBM
Ningbo → New York 25–35 days $1,380–$2,240 $2,680–$3,580 $442/CBM
Shenzhen → Houston 24–33 days $2,010–$3,465 $3,090–$4,077 $398/CBM
Qingdao → Savannah 26–38 days $1,420–$2,310 $2,750–$3,690 $410/CBM

Cargo staged at our Shenzhen consolidation warehouse can mix suppliers into one booking, which is usually the difference between an LCL minimum and a part-container. Sailing times for these lanes and city-level rates are covered in Shipping from Shenzhen and on our Sea Freight from China service page.

Door-to-Door Transit: Where 16 Days Becomes 30

Port-to-port transit is the sailing. Door-to-door transit is the sailing plus five other clocks, and only one of them is under a carrier’s control.

Stage DDP air DDP sea
Collection at the supplier Day 0–1 Day 0–2
Export clearance and consolidation 1–2 days 2–4 days, awaiting the sailing
Main transit 3–5 days in the air 15–35 days on the water
US entry and release 1–2 days 1–3 days, 2–5 more if CBP examines
Last-mile delivery 1–3 days 2–4 days after deconsolidation
Published door to door 6–8 working days About 40 days

West Coast gateways are the shortest door-to-door chain: Los Angeles and Long Beach run 15–25 days from Shanghai, Shenzhen and Ningbo. New York and Savannah run 28–38 days, and Houston 24–33 days for Texas and Midwest cargo. If your warehouse sits in Ohio, the cheapest ocean rate is often not the cheapest delivery — routing via New York or a Chicago rail ramp can trim $600–$1,200 per container in inland trucking.

Real-life scenario: a 6 CBM order of mixed hardware from Ningbo to a New Jersey 3PL quoted 32 days door to door. The vessel arrived on day 29, the entry was flagged for document review, and release came on day 34. Nobody quoted a wrong number; the quote assumed a clean entry. We now show clients two dates on this lane — a working date and a planning date, the latter carrying the exam allowance.

Seasonality moves both clocks. After Chinese New Year, ocean rates sit at their annual low; from late August they climb 20–40% as Q4 stock moves, and air capacity to JFK, LAX and ORD sells out from mid-November. Peak season surcharges add $300–$1,000 per container between September and December.

Chargeable Weight and the Weight-Break Trap

Door-to-door rates are per kilogram for a reason: the shipment is priced on chargeable weight, not on what the carton weighs on a scale.

Air freight divides cubic centimeters by 6,000, so 1 CBM is about 167 kg. Express couriers divide by 5,000, so 1 CBM becomes 200 kg, which is why bulky parcels cost more by courier. Ocean LCL prices on weight-or-measure, comparing 1 CBM against 1,000 kg and charging the greater. A 60 × 50 × 40 cm carton of pillows weighing 4 kg bills as 20 kg by air.

That arithmetic creates a counterintuitive move. At the 22 kg break our DDP air rate is $8.29/kg; from 100 kg it is $7.57/kg. A shipment measuring 88 kg chargeable can be cheaper to declare at 100 kg — $757 rather than $730 — only if the extra volume genuinely exists. Never top up a weight break artificially: the airline weighs the pallet, and a mismatch between declaration and scale reading is what a document exam is designed to find.

Repacking is the legitimate lever. Reducing carton size until the volumetric weight falls below the 100 kg threshold has cut our clients’ air cost by 15–25% on light, over-boxed goods, and it costs nothing but a re-pack instruction to the supplier. Size the shipment before you negotiate the rate with the Freight Cost Calculator.

DDP vs DAP: Two Door-to-Door Prices, One Duty Line

Both terms deliver to your address. The difference is who is the importer of record and who funds duty, and it is usually a 20–30% gap on the invoice.

Term Main freight US entry Duty and MPF Last mile Importer of record
EXW factory Buyer Buyer Buyer Buyer Buyer
FOB Chinese port Seller Buyer Buyer Buyer Buyer
CIF US port Seller Buyer Buyer Buyer Buyer
DAP (DDU) US address Seller Buyer or seller’s broker Buyer Seller Buyer
DDP US address Seller Seller’s broker Seller, inside the price Seller Seller or its broker

On a $10,000 entry at a 5% duty rate, the duty line is $500 before the merchandise processing fee, so a DAP quote that looks 25% cheaper is not cheaper — it is smaller. The buyer also needs a US tax ID, a customs bond and a broker in place before the vessel arrives.

DDP is the right structure when you have no US entity, when you sell through Amazon FBA, or when landed cost per unit must be fixed before you commit to a purchase order. DAP suits established importers who hold a continuous bond and want duty visible on their own entry summary.

Our Industry Insight: the $800 de minimis threshold no longer covers Chinese-origin goods, and the suspension has since been extended to all origins. Sellers who budget on a “duty-free under $800” memory are the ones who get a surprise invoice. Every DDP quote we issue shows the duty line separately even though the price is all-in, so the number can be checked against an HTS lookup.

If you want the duty handled end to end, the scope is described on our DDP Shipping from China service page.

The Last Mile: Commercial, Residential and FBA Are Three Different Deliveries

Door-to-door does not mean the same thing at every address. The final 50 km is where an all-in quote turns into an argument.

Delivery point What changes Typical add-on Booking lead time
Commercial with dock Standard dry van, palletized None 1–2 days notice
Commercial, no dock Liftgate required Liftgate fee per stop 1–2 days notice
Residential Appointment window, curbside only Residential surcharge, inside delivery extra 2–4 days notice
Amazon FBA FNSKU labels, packing list, carrier appointment Labeling and appointment handling Book before departure

FBA adds a constraint no other address has: the delivery appointment is booked against the fulfillment center’s receiving calendar, not yours. Labels applied at origin, a compliant packing list and a carton count that matches the appointment avoid the most common rejection — a mislabeled pallet refused at the dock and re-delivered at your cost.

Residential deliveries are priced differently for a reason: a 40ft container cannot reach a house, so it is deconsolidated and moved as LTL or parcel with a liftgate and a scheduled window.

US Import Compliance Before the Cargo Leaves China

Compliance is the cheapest stage to fix and the most expensive to discover at the port. The gate now starts at the factory, not at the border.

Requirement Applies to What it needs before loading
HTS classification Every commercial entry 10-digit code, duty rate confirmed at quote
ISF (10+2) All ocean cargo Filed 24 hours before vessel departure
CPSC certificate eFiling Regulated consumer products Certificate data filed in ACE from July 8, 2026
FCC Radio and electronic devices Compliance statement or certification
FDA Prior Notice Food, cosmetics, supplements Facility registration plus per-shipment notice
California Prop 65 Goods sold into California Warning label decided at design stage
ISPM 15 Wooden pallets and crates Heat-treated stamp and certificate
UFLPA Cotton, apparel, solar, polysilicon Supply chain traceability documents

The newest line in that table is the one rate-focused importers have not absorbed. Since July 8, 2026, importers of CPSC-regulated consumer products must electronically file certificate data with CBP through ACE; foreign trade zone entries follow on January 8, 2027. CPSC does not intend to have CBP refuse entry solely for missing certificate data at the outset, and ACE is expected to issue warnings rather than rejections — but the agency adjusts an entry line’s risk score from the filed data and can still request seizure of non-compliant goods. A blank field is not neutral.

When CBP does stop a shipment, the code matters. A 5H hold is an entry-processing hold: the entry is suspended and routed to document review. A 9H hold involves a partner government agency such as FDA, CPSC or EPA. Under 19 U.S.C. § 1499, if CBP does not issue a final determination within 30 calendar days of the detention notice, the merchandise is deemed excluded from entry and must be exported or destroyed. Meanwhile the container is on the terminal clock: US free time is typically 3–5 days, then demurrage and detention run $100–$300 per container per day.

Our Industry Insight: we treat a hold as a scheduling event, not an exception. The broker files the entry the day the arrival notice lands, the trucker is booked against the release rather than the ETA, and the client gets a status line each morning. The dollars lost to a hold are rarely the exam fee — they are the demurrage days that start while everyone waits on a document nobody requested at booking.

FAQ: Door-to-Door Shipping from China to the USA

What does door-to-door shipping from China to the USA include?

A complete service covers supplier pickup, export declaration, main carriage by air or sea, US entry and release, duty where the term is DDP, port or airport handling, and delivery to the consignee’s address. Confirm in writing whether duty, the customs bond and the FBA appointment are inside the price — those three are the usual exclusions.

How much does door-to-door shipping from China to the USA cost in Q4 2026?

For general cargo our published terms run $8.29/kg by DDP air at 22 kg and $7.57/kg from 100 kg, with 6–8 working days door to door. DDP sea runs $1.71/kg from 101 kg and $1.28/kg from 300 kg in about 40 days, plus a destination delivery fee. Port-to-port sea starts near $880 for a 20ft container and $325–$442 per CBM for LCL, before duty, brokerage and inland delivery.

How long does door-to-door shipping from China to the USA take?

DDP air is 6–8 working days; express courier 3–7 days; DDP sea about 40 days. Port-to-port sailing is 15–25 days to Los Angeles, 28–38 days to New York or Savannah and 24–33 days to Houston, with 4–9 days added for entry, handling and inland delivery. Add 2–5 days for a CBP exam.

Is door-to-door the same as DDP?

No. Door-to-door is a scope that ends at your address; DDP is an Incoterm that puts duty and the importer-of-record role on the seller. A door-to-door DAP shipment arrives with duty still owed by you.

Can you deliver to Amazon FBA warehouses?

Yes, by air and by sea, with FNSKU labels applied at origin, a compliant packing list and a receiving appointment booked before departure. FBA rejections usually come from a label or carton-count mismatch rather than from freight.

Do I need a US customs bond or an EIN under DDP?

Under DDP we file the entry under our own bond and act as importer of record, so you need neither to receive the goods. You will want your own EIN and bond once you import regularly, because it puts the entry — and the duty record — in your name.

What is not included in a door-to-door quote?

Typically insurance, duty where the term is DAP, storage beyond free time, demurrage and detention, exams and PGA testing, address changes after dispatch, and inside delivery or liftgate at a residential address. Ask for those lines explicitly rather than assuming the all-in price covers them.

Conclusion: Seven Stages, One Invoice, Three Decisions

Door-to-door pricing comes down to three choices you control: the mode, the arrival gateway and the Incoterm. The mode sets the transit band, the gateway sets the inland leg, and the Incoterm decides whether duty is inside the number or waiting at your door.

Everything else — the weight break, the exam allowance, the dock appointment — is execution, and execution is what a forwarder is paid for. Give us the commodity, the packed carton dimensions, the Chinese pickup city and the US delivery ZIP, and we will return an itemized all-in quote as soon as possible, with freight, duty and destination charges shown separately.
