Express shipping from China to Canada in 2026: courier rates by weight band, 2–7 day transit, DHL vs FedEx fees and the CAD 20 de minimis on this lane.

Express shipping from China to Canada is parcel-level transport: one courier collects at your supplier, flies the goods, clears them with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and delivers to a Canadian address, usually inside a week — for roughly CAD $8 to CAD $45 per kilo.

This guide is dated to Q4 2026: our rates by weight band, the surcharges a quote leaves out, and the two lines that decide most small Canada shipments — the CAD $20 de minimis for goods from China and the CARM registration every commercial importer now needs. Country view: Shipping from China to Canada.

Quick Answer: Express Shipping from China to Canada Costs (Q4 2026)

Canada has two express products. An integrator parcel is priced per piece by DHL, FedEx, UPS, SF Express or Aramex, billed on chargeable weight and cleared under the carrier’s own broker licence. Consolidated express cargo is priced per kilo by a forwarder that flies and clears the goods itself.

Service Practical size Cost basis (Q4 2026) Door to door
Express courier (DHL, FedEx, UPS, SF) 0.5–45 kg chargeable From about CAD $40 per parcel; CAD $17–$26 per kg mid-band 2–7 days
Consolidated express cargo 20–300 kg Per kilo, clearance commonly included 5–10 days
Air freight, for reference From 100 kg $3.80–$7.80 per kg 3–8 days
DDP air, for reference From about 20 kg All-in per kilo, duty and GST handled 6–9 days
Sea LCL, for reference 1–15 CBM $350–$460 per CBM 20–40 days

The air and sea figures are freight only — they exclude Canadian clearance, duty, GST/HST and delivery. The DDP row is all-in door to door; express sits between them, because the duty bill arrives separately unless you buy DDP.

Express Courier Rates from China to Canada by Weight Band

Couriers sell weight bands, not one flat per-kilo rate: minimum charge, pickup and handling do not shrink with the parcel. Our Q4 2026 contract rates on this lane, freight only, before the fuel surcharge:

Service 1 kg 2 kg 5 kg 10 kg 15 kg
DHL Express Worldwide $39.80 $55.40 $110.60 $220.85 $318.20
FedEx International Priority $56.10 $81.90 $106.80 $217.50 $322.90
UPS Worldwide Expedited $59.60 $69.20 $140.85 $264.10 $379.55
UPS Worldwide Saver $61.90 $78.40 $119.95 $192.60 $270.60

The effective rate falls from about $21 per kg at 5 kg to $18 per kg at 15 kg, and the same 10 kg carton costs 37% more on UPS Worldwide Expedited than on Saver. The fuel surcharge is charged as a percentage of freight and spent 2026 between the high teens and above thirty percent, which is why we quote express as a landed figure rather than a headline rate. The card on the Express Courier from China page is ours, and most of this lane’s volume is collected in Shenzhen before it flies.

Chargeable Weight: Why a 10 kg Carton Can Bill as 24 kg

Couriers bill the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight at the express divisor of 5,000 — length × width × height in centimetres, divided by 5,000 — which is stricter than the airline divisor of 6,000. A 60 × 50 × 40 cm carton weighing 11 kg therefore bills at 24 kg, so splitting one bulky carton into two flat-packed boxes can halve the billed weight.

DHL vs FedEx vs UPS on the China–Canada Lane

All four networks clear commercial goods under their own CBSA carrier code and licence, and all bill back the duty and tax they advance with a percentage-based fee on top:

Courier Transit to major cities Clearance fee basis (2026 published) Strongest on
DHL Express 2–4 business days 2.75% of duty and tax advanced, min CAD $12 with a brokerage account, $18 without Regulated, high-value parcels
FedEx International Priority 3–5 business days Greater of 3.10% of duty and tax advanced or CAD $12 Mid-weight commercial parcels
UPS Worldwide Saver / Expedited 3–6 business days Entry preparation fee plus a disbursement fee on the advanced amount Heavier parcels

These are the carriers’ published 2026 Canadian cards, and they move every January: FedEx lifted its disbursement fee from 2.95% to 3.10% and its floor to CAD $12.00 in July. Sources: FedEx’s 2026 Canadian rate changes and DHL’s 2026 Canada rate guide.

Our Industry Insight: On the Canada lane the paperwork decides the day, not the flight. A parcel arriving with a complete commercial invoice, a correct HS code and a consignee record matching the CBSA file clears at the first port; the same parcel described as “gift” sits in an exam queue and costs more in storage than the duty would have. We prepare the entry data while the parcel is still being packed in China, because once it is airborne nothing on the paperwork can be fixed from Shenzhen.

What a China–Canada Express Quote Leaves Out

The published rate is the freight line. Everything below is charged separately, and most of it lands on the Canadian consignee unless you buy the lane as DDP:

Charge Basis (2026 published) Billed to
Disbursement fee DHL 2.75% of duty and tax advanced, min CAD $12–$18; FedEx greater of 3.10% or CAD $12 Duty payer
Government agency fee FedEx CAD $17.10 per entry; DHL CAD $16.00 plus certificate cost Consignee
Remote / out-of-delivery-area FedEx international Tier B greater of CAD $36.30 or $0.46 per 0.5 kg; Tier C $47.10 or $0.62 Consignee

The disbursement fee is a percentage of the duty and tax the carrier advanced, so it grows with your duty bill: on a CAD $900 assessment, FedEx’s 3.10% is CAD $27.90, not CAD $12. The Other Government Agency fee applies whenever a shipment needs a permit, a health or phytosanitary control or a certificate — common for cosmetics, food and medical devices. Canada’s peak from late September to the second week of January is priced separately: FedEx adjusted its Demand Surcharge for Canada Express international services on 21 September 2026 and added non-standard shipment fees for oversize packages.

Where Express Stops Being Worth It: 45 kg to 300 kg

Express bundles collection, flight, clearance and delivery into one transaction, which is why it wins at low weights. Above roughly 45 kg the per-kilo rate stops falling, and a consolidated air shipment’s separate handling, brokerage and delivery charges undercut the courier’s bundled price.

Mode Practical range Transit door to door Priced by Use it when
Express courier 0.5–45 kg 2–7 days Chargeable weight, per parcel Urgent, small or high-value goods
Consolidated air freight 45–300 kg 5–10 days Chargeable weight, per kilo You have a pallet and a week
Sea LCL 1–15 CBM 20–40 days Per CBM, 1 CBM minimum You can wait and the cargo is bulky
Sea FCL 15+ CBM 20–35 days to Vancouver Per container You can fill a 20ft or 40ft

The comparison works on like-for-like scope: a 45 kg courier quote is door to door with clearance, while a 45 kg air quote is usually airport to airport. The gap closes at 100 kg and reverses by 300 kg, so we quote Air Freight from China above 45 kg.

The Crossover Is in Cubic Metres, Not Kilograms

Light, bulky cargo crosses over earlier, because sea LCL is priced per cubic metre while express and air are priced per kilo: 8 cartons of textiles weighing 60 kg but measuring 0.6 CBM bill as 60–72 kg by express and as a 1 CBM minimum by sea. Most Canada tariffs also bill 1 CBM to Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto but 2 CBM inland. Run both through the Freight Cost Calculator.

Canadian Customs on a Courier Parcel: the CAD 20 De Minimis

Canada’s de minimis for goods from China is CAD $20 per shipment — not the CAD $150 many buyers read about, and not the suspended United States $800 rule. Those higher figures apply only to goods from the United States or Mexico under CUSMA. For Chinese-origin goods the Courier Imports Remission Order remits duties, excise taxes and provincial sales tax only up to CAD $20 of value for duty.

Consignment and origin Duty GST/HST Remission code
CAD $0–$20, any country except the US or Mexico (includes China) Remitted Non-taxable 85-2955-1
CAD $0–$150, from the US or Mexico Remitted up to $150 Non-taxable only to $40 85-2955-2 and -3
Above CAD $20 from elsewhere, or above CAD $150 from the US or Mexico Payable Payable Declared on the entry

Splitting an order does not work: CBSA assesses the value of the transaction, not the number of boxes, so five parcels of CAD $18 from one order are one CAD $90 importation. A cash-on-delivery surprise is normal on this lane: a commercial parcel above CAD $20 attracts GST plus duty before release. CBSA’s courier low value shipment program has the detail.

GST, HST and PST at the Border

Duty is charged on the value for duty, GST at 5% on the value for duty plus the duty, and provincial tax by the province of importation for PST or the buyer’s province of residence for HST — so a parcel entering through a different province than the one you sell in can attract a tax you cannot recover at the point of sale.

Layer Base Rate Notes
Customs duty (MFN) Value for duty 18% on knitted cotton apparel, 6% on motor-vehicle seats, by tariff item Chinese-origin goods pay MFN; CETA and CPTPP do not cover China
GST Value for duty + duty 5% On almost every import above CAD $20
HST or QST Value for duty + duty 13–15% HST, or Quebec’s QST on top of GST Recoverable as an input tax credit if GST-registered

For a GST-registered business that tax is generally recoverable as an input tax credit, which is why we show duty and tax separately on every DDP invoice.

CARM: Why a Courier Parcel Still Needs a Business Number

Since CARM became Canada’s official system of record on 21 October 2024, every business importing commercial goods needs a CRA Business Number with an RM import program account and a CARM Client Portal registration. Release before payment also requires the importer’s own financial security: a surety bond at 50% of the highest monthly duty and tax, minimum CAD $25,000, or a cash deposit at 100%. The broker’s bond ended with CARM.

CBSA ran its first annual review of that security requirement on 20 October 2025, and importers whose requirement increased had to top up by 15 January 2026 to keep release-prior-to-payment privileges. In June 2026 CBSA extended a modified compliance approach for twelve months, and it plans to mandate advance electronic data for courier low value shipments. Steps: CBSA’s CARM program guidance.

The Surtax and Anti-Dumping Lines That Catch Small Consignments

The de minimis threshold protects a parcel from duty and tax. It does not protect it from trade remedies:

Measure Effective Applies to Rate
China Surtax Order (2024) 22 October 2024 Steel and aluminum goods originating in China 25% of value for duty
Steel Goods and Aluminum Goods Surtax Order 31 July 2025 Steel melted and poured, or aluminum smelted and cast, in China, whatever the export country except the US 25% of value for duty
Steel Derivative Goods Surtax Order 26 December 2025 Specified steel derivative goods, all countries 25% of value for duty
Upholstered domestic seating (SIMA) CITT finding 2 September 2021; reviews ongoing Sofas, chairs, loveseats and similar seating from China 188% of export price without normal values

Two exemptions matter. Goods accounted for in a single declaration with a cumulative value for duty of CAD $5,000 or less are not subject to the steel and aluminum goods surtax, and casual goods are excluded — which is why a small parcel of hardware often escapes the 25% while a pallet does not. Anti-dumping duty is different: on categories like upholstered seating a parcel can arrive with a duty bill larger than the goods, so check CBSA’s measures in force first.

Our Industry Insight: The parcels that cost our clients the most are rarely the heavy ones. They are 40–60 kg consignments of a product with a trade remedy against it — upholstered seating and steel hardware are the two we see most — where the importer priced the shipment on courier rates and met the anti-dumping line at clearance. We now screen every Canada-bound product line before quoting, and quote the duty into the price.

How Long Express Takes: The Arrival Clock at YVR, YYZ and YUL

Transit time is four separate clocks, and only the first is the airline’s:

Stage Time Controlled by
Pickup and export processing in China 8–24 hours Supplier readiness and the courier’s cut-off
Air leg to YVR, YYZ or YUL 1–3 days, direct or one connection The airline and the space booked
CBSA release Same day to 3 days Completeness of the entry data and risk assessment
Final delivery 1–2 business days urban, 2–5 rural Line-haul, weather, appointment

Air carriers must transmit advance commercial information to CBSA four hours before arrival, or at departure for flights under four hours, and couriers holding that data and release privileges clear a parcel while it is still on the aircraft — which is why an express parcel to Toronto can deliver on day three while a similar air freight shipment sits three days at the airport.

Real-Life Scenario — the sample kit that beat the launch date: A Montreal distributor needed approval units for a retail listing on 2026-11-02, and the supplier quoted a 21-day economy air line at roughly CAD $9 per kg on a 38 kg kit. We split it instead of upgrading it: six approval units went by DHL express at a billed weight of 6.5 kg, about CAD $145 of freight, landing on day four, while the remaining 31.5 kg went by consolidated air freight and arrived on day nine for about what the single shipment would have cost.

Packing Samples and Small Replenishment for Canada

Because duty and tax start at CAD $20 on this lane rather than CAD $150, the packing decisions that are optional elsewhere are load-bearing here:

Requirement What it means Why it stops shipments
Country-of-origin marking Legibly marked with the country of origin, for example “Made in China” Unmarked goods can be held or marked at your cost
ISPM 15 for wooden packaging Heat treatment or fumigation and the stamp on wood pallets and crates Untreated wood is refused or returned at your expense
Bilingual labeling for Quebec French at least as prominent as any other language on packaging; tightened 1 June 2025, transition to 1 June 2027 for existing packaging Quebec retail goods can be held or refused
Battery declaration Right packing instruction and label for lithium batteries Undeclared batteries mean a formal, delayed entry
Regulated goods Health Canada, CFIA or provincial permits for food, cosmetics and devices Goods needing a permit cannot use the low value courier pathway

Note also how far the two North American markets have diverged at the low end — our Express Shipping from China to USA: 2026 Costs, Transit & Duty guide covers a market where de minimis is suspended entirely.

FAQ: Express Shipping from China to Canada

How much does express shipping from China to Canada cost?

On our Q4 2026 rates a 1 kg parcel starts near CAD $40, a 5 kg parcel runs CAD $107–$141 and a 15 kg parcel CAD $271–$380, before the fuel surcharge.

How long does express shipping take from China to Canada?

Two to seven business days door to door, with Vancouver and Toronto fastest at 2–5 and the territories at 5–8. Clearance is same-day with complete entry data and one to three days without it.

Which courier is cheapest from China to Canada?

It changes by band: on our card DHL is cheapest at 1 kg and 2 kg, FedEx International Priority at 5 kg, and UPS Worldwide Saver at 10 kg and 15 kg, while SF Express competes on transit rather than price.

Do I pay duty and GST on an express parcel to Canada?

Yes, above CAD $20 of value for duty, which is the threshold for goods from China rather than the CAD $150 limit for US and Mexican goods. For a GST-registered business the 5% GST and any HST are generally recoverable as an input tax credit; duty is not.

Can I split one order into several parcels to stay under CAD $20?

No. CBSA assesses the value of the transaction rather than the number of parcels, so split shipments are assessed as one importation — and each parcel adds its own clearance fee, disbursement fee and delivery leg.

Do I need a CARM account to receive an express parcel in Canada?

If you are the importer of record, yes: a CRA Business Number with an RM import program account, a CARM Client Portal registration, and your own Release Prior to Payment security for release before payment. Couriers and brokers can hold delegated access, but accountability sits with you.

Conclusion: Send the Dimensions, Not Just the Weight

Express shipping from China to Canada is a predictable service on a lane with unusually strict low-value rules. The rate depends on billed weight rather than scale weight, so the carton’s dimensions decide the price before the courier brand does. Duty and GST begin at CAD $20 for Chinese-origin goods, CARM registration and release security are the importer’s own responsibility rather than the broker’s, and on a few categories — upholstered seating, steel and aluminum goods — the trade remedy line costs more than the freight, duty and tax together.
