Express shipping from China to the USA in 2026: courier rates by weight band, 2–7 day transit, DHL vs FedEx vs UPS, surcharges and duty on a courier parcel.
Express shipping from China to the USA is parcel-level transport: one courier collects at your supplier, flies the goods, clears them with US Customs and Border Protection and delivers to a US address, usually inside a working week. Published per-kilo figures for this lane run from about $6 to $40, and none of them is invented — they price different weight bands, service levels and charge sets.
This guide is dated to Q4 2026: our contract rates by weight band, the surcharges a quote leaves out, where express stops beating air freight and sea LCL, and the duty line that changed once de minimis was suspended. For the country view, see our China to USA shipping guide.
Quick Answer: Express Shipping from China to USA Costs (Q4 2026)
The USA has two express products: an integrator parcel priced per piece by DHL, FedEx, UPS or Aramex, and consolidated express cargo priced per kilo by a forwarder that clears it in its own name.
| Service | Practical size | Cost basis (Q4 2026) | Door to door |
|---|---|---|---|
| Express courier (DHL, FedEx, UPS, Aramex) | 0.5–45 kg chargeable | From about $32 per parcel; $7–$20 per kg mid-band | 2–7 days |
| Consolidated express cargo | 20–300 kg | Per kilo, clearance included | 4–9 days |
| Air freight, for reference | From 100 kg | $3.50–$7.50 per kg at the 100 kg break | 3–7 days |
| DDP air, for reference | From about 20 kg | $7.57–$8.29 per kg all-in, duty included | 6–8 working days |
| Sea LCL, for reference | 1–15 CBM | $325–$442 per CBM | 15–35 days |
Both express rows are freight-side prices: the fuel surcharge, any remote-area delivery fee and the duty sit on top unless you buy the lane as DDP.
Express Courier Rates from China to the USA by Weight Band
Couriers sell weight bands, not one flat per-kilo rate: the minimum charge, pickup, screening and handling do not shrink with the parcel. Our Q4 2026 contract rates on this lane, freight only:
| Courier | 1 kg | 2 kg | 5 kg | 10 kg | 15 kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DHL | $38.53 | $53.15 | $106.43 | $212.58 | $306.04 |
| FedEx International Priority | $53.98 | $78.67 | $102.46 | $208.67 | $309.91 |
| UPS Worldwide Expedited | $57.43 | $66.56 | $135.52 | $254.10 | $365.16 |
| UPS Worldwide Saver | $59.60 | $75.30 | $115.30 | $185.09 | $260.08 |
Read down a column and the same 10 kg carton costs 37% more on UPS Worldwide Expedited than on Saver. Read across a row and the effective per-kilo rate falls as fixed costs dilute:
| Chargeable weight | Cheapest service | Rate | Effective per kg |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 kg | DHL | $38.53 | $38.53/kg |
| 2 kg | DHL | $53.15 | $26.58/kg |
| 5 kg | FedEx International Priority | $102.46 | $20.49/kg |
| 10 kg | UPS Worldwide Saver | $185.09 | $18.51/kg |
| 15 kg | UPS Worldwide Saver | $260.08 | $17.34/kg |
We quote against these bands on the express courier service from China page; those are prices for a box on a scale, and most parcels are not.
Chargeable Weight: Why a 10 kg Carton Can Bill as 24 kg
Couriers bill chargeable weight — the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight, at the express divisor of 5,000: length × width × height in centimetres, divided by 5,000. That is stricter than the airline divisor of 6,000, so a parcel that flies as 10 kg on a consolidated air waybill can bill as 12 kg on a courier tariff.
| Packed carton | Scale weight | Volumetric weight (÷5,000) | Billed as |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 × 30 × 20 cm | 10 kg | 4.8 kg | 10 kg, the actual weight |
| 60 × 50 × 40 cm | 10 kg | 24 kg | 24 kg, the carton |
| 90 × 40 × 35 cm | 10 kg | 25.2 kg | 25.2 kg, the carton |
Billing rounds up to the next 0.5 kg above a 0.5 kg minimum, so an envelope under half a kilo still bills as 0.5 kg. This is where a supplier’s “it is only 10 kg” turns into a 24 kg invoice.
DHL vs FedEx vs UPS on This Lane
No courier is cheapest or fastest for every parcel, and on China–USA the differences are structural. DHL, FedEx and UPS all lift from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Hong Kong daily.
| Carrier and service | Typical transit | China pickup network | Where it wins on this lane |
|---|---|---|---|
| DHL Express Worldwide | 2–4 business days | Widest China coverage | Small parcels and documents |
| FedEx International Priority | 2–5 business days | Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai | The 5–21 kg band; widest US inland reach |
| UPS Worldwide Saver | 3–5 business days | Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou | 10–45 kg into the Midwest and Texas |
| UPS Worldwide Expedited | 3–6 business days | Same network | Time-definite by a given hour |
| Aramex | 4–7 business days | Guangzhou, Yiwu | Cost-sensitive parcels |
Which Courier Is Fastest to New York, Chicago and Los Angeles
Transit is decided by the hub, not the coast: FedEx routes its Asia cargo through Memphis, UPS through Louisville and DHL through Cincinnati, so a secondary city can be as fast as the gateway. What moves the date is the origin cut-off, whether the flight connects, and the entry on arrival.
Our Industry Insight: On this lane the courier choice matters less than the data travelling with the parcel. A 2 kg sample with a vague description and no HTS code sits in an exam queue for three days; the same sample with a correct HTS code, a real product description and a complete shipper record clears the same day. We prepare the entry data while the parcel is being collected, because once it is airborne the paperwork cannot be fixed from China.
What a China–USA Express Quote Leaves Out
Freight is the number compared and rarely the number paid. Most of these line items never appear in the quote you are shown.
| Line item | How it is charged | Typical 2026 amount | Who it hits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel surcharge | Percentage of base freight, revised monthly or weekly | 16–32% of the freight line | Every parcel |
| Peak surcharge | Per kilo or flat, in declared peak windows | $0.30–$2.00 per kg | October to December |
| Additional handling | Per piece over 120 cm long or above 32 kg | $12–$35 per piece | Bulky, heavy cartons |
| Residential delivery | Per shipment, when the consignee is a home address | About $6.95 | Direct-to-consumer shipments |
| Saturday delivery | Per shipment, where the service offers it | About $46.00 | Weekend deadlines |
| Duty advance (DDU only) | Percentage of what the courier fronts | About 2% of the advance, minimum $17.00 | Recipients billed on delivery |
| Remote-area delivery | Per kilo or flat, outside the core network | $25–$60 per shipment | Rural ZIP codes, Alaska and Hawaii |
Fuel Surcharges in 2026: Weekly, Not Monthly
Most quotes assume a monthly fuel index, and 2026 has not been a monthly year. Fuel is a percentage of base freight, revised monthly by some carriers and weekly by others, so a rate quoted on the first of the month can be priced against a different index when the parcel flies.
Our Industry Insight: Through 2026 the fuel line on this lane has swung from the high teens to above thirty percent inside a single quarter. That is why we quote express as a landed figure with the surcharge scope written down rather than as a headline per-kilo rate: when a quote looks eight dollars a kilo cheaper than ours, the first question is which surcharge set it leaves out.
Where Express Stops Being Worth It: 45 kg to 300 kg
Express is not the cheapest way to move 100 kg, and not the only way to move 20 kg. An airline tariff adds arrival handling, brokerage, duty funding and delivery on top, while the same weight by express bills once, door to door. Between about 45 kg and 150 kg express usually wins; past about 300 kg air freight from China and, beyond roughly 12 CBM, sea LCL take over.
The Crossover Is in Cubic Metres, Not Kilograms
Light cargo decides most of these shipments by volume. Price the same parcel three ways — express at our bands, and sea LCL at the lane rate with a one-CBM minimum and destination charges of about $350:
| Parcel | Billed weight, express | Express, door to door | Sea LCL, landed | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.05 CBM / 10 kg | 10 kg | $185.09–$254.10 | $675–$792 | Express, comfortably |
| 0.25 CBM / 50 kg | 50 kg | $550–$780 | $675–$792 | Even money — pick on the deadline |
| 0.50 CBM / 100 kg | 100 kg | $950–$1,300 | $675–$792 | Sea on price, express on a date |
The lines cross between roughly 0.25 and 0.4 CBM: below that the LCL minimum decides the invoice, above it sea wins on cost and loses two to four weeks. Above 100 kg consolidated air usually beats express within a couple of days — worth pricing all three modes with the freight cost calculator.
US Customs on a Courier Parcel: Duty, MPF and the Suspended de Minimis
Customs on an express parcel is entry-driven, and the rules changed. The $800 de minimis exemption that used to clear low-value commercial parcels duty-free has been suspended for all origins since August 2025, so a courier parcel from China now needs an entry and pays duty at every value, including the sample under $800 that buyers still assume is free.
| Charge | Rate | Applied on | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Import duty (HTS) | 0–20%, averaging 3–5% | Customs value: goods + freight + insurance | Set by the HTS code on your invoice |
| Section 301 tariff | Varies by code and origin | Customs value | Stacks on the base duty where listed |
| MPF (Merchandise Processing Fee) | 0.3464% | Customs value, formal entries | Informal entries pay a small flat fee instead |
| HMF (Harbor Maintenance Fee) | 0.125% | Ocean cargo only | Never applies to air express |
| State sales tax | State rate | Taxable goods where the seller has nexus | Not a customs charge |
| Courier duty advance | About 2% of the advance, minimum $17.00 | DDU shipments | Paid by the recipient |
Your HS code sets the real numbers; what is not public is which of them a quote has already absorbed. Classification is answered on the USITC tariff schedule, and the entry rules sit in 19 CFR Part 149.
DDU or DDP: Who Pays the Duty
On DDU, also sold as DAP, the courier advances duty and MPF and bills the recipient, adding a duty-advance fee. On DDP the duty is inside our price and we clear as the Importer of Record, which is how most of our US parcels move. For a first shipment to a new customer DDU is the wrong default: the recipient meets an unexpected bill, refuses delivery, and the parcel sits in a warehouse at their cost. The model is set out in our DDP Shipping from China to USA: All-In Costs & Times guide.
A Worked Example: 30 kg of Accessories to a New Jersey 3PL
A brand orders 30 kg of phone accessories, FOB Shenzhen, valued at $9,000, booked DDP express to a New Jersey 3PL.
| Line | Amount | How it is calculated |
|---|---|---|
| Goods value, FOB Shenzhen | $9,000 | Supplier invoice |
| Express freight, 30 kg door to door | $520–$640 | Between the 20 kg and 45 kg bands |
| Insurance | $45 | Written against the CIF value |
| CIF value | $9,565–$9,685 | Goods plus freight plus insurance |
| Import duty | $335–$339 | 3.5% of CIF — your HTS code sets the real rate |
| MPF | $33.13–$33.55 | 0.3464% of CIF, formal entry |
| HMF | Not applicable | Air cargo pays no harbor maintenance fee |
| Brokerage, clearance and delivery to the 3PL | Included | Inside the DDP price |
| Total landed | $9,933–$10,058 | Excludes storage and waiting time |
Freight is roughly six percent of that invoice and duty and MPF about four percent more: the declared value and the HTS code decide more of landed cost than the courier negotiation does.
How Long Express Takes: The Arrival Clock at JFK, ORD and LAX
Plan on 2–7 days door to door: 2–4 for a document or small parcel on a direct service, 5–7 for a multi-piece consignment into an inland ZIP. That window is five clocks running in sequence.
| Stage | Typical time | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Collection and origin processing at CAN, PVG or HKG | 1–2 days | Order cut-off; screening, the HS code on the invoice, battery documentation |
| Flight to JFK, ORD or LAX | 12–20 hours | Direct capacity versus a transfer in Anchorage, Incheon or Dubai |
| Arrival, ULD breakdown and release | 4–24 hours | Handling agent, arrival slot, and the consignee on the air waybill |
| Entry filed in ACE, duty assessed and paid | Same day to 2 days | Documents complete; whether CBP selects the shipment for exam |
| Final delivery | 1–3 days | Metro address versus a rural ZIP; residential versus commercial |
Air cargo is faster in the air and less forgiving on the ground: there is no multi-day free period to absorb a missing document. About 1–5% of shipments are pulled for a customs exam, adding roughly 2–5 days and an exam fee in the low hundreds of dollars. Peak windows move the date more than the aircraft does: Golden Week stops Chinese collections, Q4 tightens space from October, and Chinese New Year closes factories in late January.
Packing Samples and Small Replenishment Orders
For samples and small top-ups, the packing decision costs or saves more than the courier negotiation does:
- Ask for packed dimensions and gross weight before you agree a price. Loose packing adds billed kilos at 5,000 cubic centimetres per kilo.
- Nest, flat-pack or ship knocked down, and vacuum-pack soft goods. A stacked chair and a standing chair are different shipments.
- Consolidate suppliers onto one air waybill, and ship the sample with the production data. The invoice, HS code and labels used for the full order avoid a second setup later.
Real-Life Scenario — the launch kit that repacked from 24 kg to 11 kg: A beauty brand asked us to fly a 10 kg launch kit to a Los Angeles showroom in five days. As packed, it sat in one 60 × 50 × 40 cm carton — 0.12 CBM, which at the express divisor of 5,000 bills as 24 kg, or roughly $445–$610 of freight before the fuel line. The supplier split it into two flat-packed cartons totalling 0.055 CBM: billed weight fell to 11 kg, the price to about $205–$280, and the kits still landed on day three.
FAQ: Express Shipping from China to the USA
How much does express shipping from China to the USA cost?
From about $32 per parcel for documents to roughly $1,300 for 100 kg, freight only and before the fuel surcharge. The per-kilo rate falls as the parcel gets heavier, from the high thirties at 1 kg to the high teens at 15 kg.
How long does express shipping from China to the USA take?
2–7 days door to door: collection and origin processing, 12–20 hours of flight, ULD breakdown on arrival, one to two days for the entry and duty, then delivery. Two to four days is realistic for a document on a direct service; five to seven for a multi-piece consignment into an inland ZIP.
Which courier is cheapest from China to the USA?
There is no single answer. On our contract rates DHL is cheapest at 1 kg and 2 kg, FedEx International Priority at 5 kg, and UPS Worldwide Saver from 10 kg upward. The spread on the same 10 kg carton is about 37%, so asking for one courier by name usually costs money.
Do I pay duty on an express parcel to the USA?
Yes. After the de minimis suspension, commercial parcels from China need an entry and pay duty at every value, including samples under $800. Duty follows your HTS code and averages a few percent, with MPF on a formal entry; on DDU the courier bills the recipient; on DDP the duty is inside our price.
Can I ship batteries or electronics by express to the USA?
Devices containing batteries travel on selected services with the right declaration and a state-of-charge limit on some air shipments. Standalone lithium batteries under UN3480 need carrier approval, a UN38.3 report and a safety data sheet; electronics offered for sale can need FCC authorisation before they reach a US shelf.
Can express ship to an Amazon FBA warehouse?
Yes. We deliver to US FBA fulfilment centres, prep centres and 3PL warehouses with the FNSKU labels applied at origin and a receiving appointment booked before the parcel flies. Express suits small replenishments; for a full pallet, air freight or sea is cheaper.
What documents do I need for an express parcel to the USA?
A commercial invoice with a real product description, quantity, value and HTS code; a packing list; and the air waybill, which the courier issues. Under DDP we file the entry as your Importer of Record.
Conclusion: Send the Dimensions, Not Just the Weight
Express shipping from China to the USA comes down to three numbers. Your chargeable weight, because a light, bulky carton bills on volume at the express divisor of 5,000, which can move a parcel two bands and double its price. Your declared value, because there is no longer a duty-free threshold under $800. And your service level: the same 10 kg carton costs about 37% more on one courier than another. The suspension itself is documented in the continuing suspension notice.
Send the commodity, the packed carton dimensions and weights, the HTS code if you have one, and the delivery address in the US, and we will return an itemized quote as soon as possible with freight, surcharges and duty on separate lines. Request a free quote with your parcel details, and we will price the courier, consolidated air and sea options side by side.
